PARISH KICKING OFF HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS CAMPAIGN

SCPStrong campaign to include public meetings, brochure and social media

Post Date:May 04, 2017 7:42 p.m.

Hurricane BrochureSt. Charles Parish, LA - The Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is launching a hurricane preparedness campaign for residents beginning in the month of May.

The SCPStrong campaign, inspired by the national campaign ‘HurricaneStrong’ will include public meetings, a mass mailing of the ‘Be Prepared’ brochure and social media posts geared specifically toward St. Charles Parish residents.

“The administration and the council are taking a proactive approach to the hurricanestrong theme by holding meetings across the parish,” said St. Charles Parish President Larry Cochran. “Together with the council, we want to make sure that the message is loud and clear at these meetings: be prepared.”

The public meetings will provide residents with a 2017 hurricane season outlook, preparedness tips, copies of the parish’s ‘Be Prepared’ hurricane brochure and answers to questions.

“Our residents should preplan a safe route out of harm’s way as early as possible to avoid traffic jams which could cause unnecessary stress during a hurricane.” said Council Chairman Terrell Wilson.

The dates that have been set are as follows:

  • 5:30 p.m. May 10, West Regional Library, 105 Lakewood Drive Luling LA 70070

  • 9:30 a.m. July 19 Edward A. Dufresne Community Center, 274 Judge Dufresne Parkway Luling LA 70070

In addition to the meetings, the Public Information Office is mailing a revamped version of the parish’s award-winning ‘Be Prepared’ hurricane brochure to all households in May. Copies will also be available in the lobby of the courthouse in Hahnville. The information is presented in a cut-and-post format so families can separate information important to them to post on a refrigerator or home message board.

“It has been 11 years since the last major hurricane made landfall here in the U.S. (Hurricane Wilma),” said Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Joe Ganote. “It is our goal this year to combat any complacency that might have set in with our residents.”

The parish’s updated hurricane preparedness website is live at www.stcharlesparish-la.gov/hurricane.
All hurricane information and tips on social media will be shared using the #SCPStrong.
